This article talks more about what it was like for the fab five to be a part of the so-called prank pulled on them by the nominator who happened to be a cop. I explained the situation in my last blog post if you want more information about it. Tan France was born in England to Muslim-Pakistani parents, so him and Karamo are the two people of color on the show. When this incident happened they were not happy at all. "Afterwards, we were fuming, saying 'this can never happen again. This wasn’t OK. You don’t know what it feels like to be a person of color and get pulled over,'" France told Refinery29. "We didn’t want to film the next day. We were like 'we’re done. That’s it.'" This is a quote from the Refinery Article where they interviewed the Fab 5.
This is an understandable reaction due to the fact that at the time of this, the media and nation was filled with articles and stories and experiences of people of color being wrongly treated by police. Even though this was meant to be a lighthearted joke, it is important to know your audience and know your time, and to think that the producers thought this was okay is for sure questionable.
Tan did mention though that "...in retrospect, reiterated the scene's value, as well. “Thankfully it turned out great in the end because it’s a conversation that needs to be had," he told Refinery29"
This is a positive way to look at the prank because in the end it is a conversation that has to be talked about. It is important to show these kinds of things and how they effect people of color and all people in general, to put yourself in their shoes a little and try to understand their feelings around it.
